PS accuses Chega of disrespecting Edite Estrela and expects action from Santos Silva

“It is not just a case of bad parliamentary practice, it was a case of disrespect for all deputies, because the Vice President, who presides over the session, represents all of us,” said Eurico Brilhante Dias, who believed that the “disrespect for the vice president, with hints of misogyny, and disrespect for a woman who presided over the session”.

Speaking to journalists at the end of the socialist group’s weekly meeting, the parliamentary leader expressed his “total solidarity” with Edite Estrela (also a PS deputy), and his rejection of what happened, since “what happened happened yesterday [quarta-feira] It was extremely serious.”

“Freedom of expression is not an insult. There are rules to be followed and yesterday, unfortunately, the deputy Edite Estrela, a brave and valuable deputy of this Chamber, was insulted, the deputy who presided over the session was not respected. parliament,” he said.

At issue is the incident that took place during the plenary session on Thursday, during Chega’s political statement, devoted to the issue of agriculture.

In response to a request for clarification, Deputy Pedro Frazão referred to the presence of Brazil’s President, Lula da Silva, in parliament, leading Vice President Edite Estrela, who was leading the work at the time, to interrupt him and ask him to to remain the subject.

Several deputies from Chega protested and Pedro Frazão said that that attitude was “unfortunate” and that he did not accept that his speech was conditioned because he continued to speak at the same time as Edite Estrela and other deputies from the same bench. .

Today, Eurico Brilhante Dias said he hoped that the “President of the Assembly of the Republic, depending on what happened, also in the framework of both the Conference of Leaders and the Conference of Presidents [das comissões parlamentares]raise this issue and allow politeness, the minimum respect between deputies, to prevail”.

Pointing out that parliament has “a code of conduct for deputies and a statute for deputies” and that while there may be “live” debates and asides, “there are obligations that must be met”, the PS parliamentary leader defended that ” the code of conduct was violated” and accused Chega of “wanting to downgrade the parliamentary institution and democracy”.

“The tools we have in the Code of Conduct are what they are and we will use all those tools that are there under the Code of Conduct and the Statute of Representatives, but we will continue to strive for a healthier parliamentary treatment. is not this kind of confrontation,” he said, indicating that the PS “will monitor these incidents and continue to monitor them vigilantly”.

The Socialist leader assured that the Socialist deputies “have tried to defend the parliament and the parliamentary institution as best they can” and will “remain vigilant so that the environmental degradation within the chamber does not embarrass democracy”.
