The leader of the liberal initiative, Rui Rocha, defended this Sunday that the Assembly of the Republic “cannot receive an ally of Putin like Lula on April 25”, recalling that in the same parliament the president of Ukraine spoke by video conference.
“The Assembly of the Republic [AR] who invited Zelensky to speak on April 21, 2022, cannot host a Putin ally like Lula on April 25. And the president of the republic who awarded the Order of Freedom to Zelensky cannot feel comfortable with the presence of a Putin ally like Lula in the AR on April 25,” Rui Rocha wrote on the social network Twitter.
This morning, through its First Vice President Paulo Rangel, the PSD urged the government to “take a public and formal position”, distancing itself from the Brazilian President’s statements that the European Union, NATO (Atlantic Alliance) and inciting the United States to war in Ukraine.
IL had already criticized this week that the welcome session for Brazil’s president in the Portuguese parliament was scheduled on the same day as the formal session on April 25 (the first at 10 a.m., the second at 11:30 a.m.). am) and announced that he would only be institutionally represented in the session dedicated to Lula da Silva.
The parliamentary leader, Rodrigo Saraiva, then defended that this coincidence of dates meant “an instrumentalization of that date of freedom”, which represents April 25 for Portugal.
The presence in parliament of the President of Brazil – who is visiting Portugal between April 22 and 25 – has been shrouded in controversy since Foreign Minister João Gomes Cravinho spoke explicitly in February in a speech by Lula da Silva at the session of the April revolution in the Assembly of the Republic, which marked the unprecedented character, which the opposition of PSD, IL and Chega deserved.
The parliament finally decided that, instead of an intervention by the President of Brazil during the annual solemn commemoration session, it would hold a separate welcome session on the same day during Lula da Silva’s state visit to Portugal.
On Saturday, at the end of a visit to China, Brazil’s president defended that “the United States should stop encouraging war” in Ukraine and that “the European Union should start talking about peace”.
In this way, he explained to journalists, the international community will be able to “convince” Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelensky that “peace is in the interest of the whole world”.
“Patience is needed” to talk to Putin and Zelensky, he said. “But above all, we must convince the countries that supply weapons, that encourage war, to stop,” he added.
Russian Foreign Ministry Sergei Lavrov will be in Brasília on Monday, where he will be received by his counterpart, Mauro Vieira, at the Itamaraty Palace.
