It seems a certainty: the current government will not make it to the end of the legislature. It is the idea that arises from the way in which in recent days the public exchange of messages between the parties on the right of the PS and the President of the Republic has taken place under the conditions of an alternative government to that of the Socialists . They all assume that Marcelo will have a decisive say in the formation of this supposed government.
The truth is that the president’s term of office expires in March 2026. So before the end of the current government mandate (October 2026). The president only has a word to say if he calls an early election first. For example, in response to a possible political crisis that will arise after the European elections (June next year).
This Wednesday, André Ventura went to Belém to talk to Marcelo and left the 35-minute audience, guaranteeing that the PR will not stand in the way of Chega’s participation in a government solution – an argument there that assumes Marcelo will still be PR when this problem finally arises.
“The President of the Republic shall not hinder any form of government participation by Chega, the President of the Republic shall not hinder the formation of a government if the political parties accept to form that government, if the base of the parties accept it, and if there is this availability and ability to form a majority on the right”, mention.
André Ventura – who had already said he would ask Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa for this clarification following last week’s news – said what he heard was “particularly important and satisfying”. “This was very important data for us, because if we want a change, if we want a dissolution of parliament, there must be an alternative at the same time, and it was important to clarify this with the President of the Republic. I have always felt that the President of the Republic was not opposed to a political solution involving Chega or led by Chega on the right,” he said.
Chega’s president thanked Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa for his “clear words” and classified them as having a “responsible attitude”. Asked if he no longer believes the head of state forced the PSD leader to say he would not accept government solutions with Chega, an accusation made by Ventura on Tuesday, he replied: “The president of the republic has told me clearly and indicate that it had nothing to do with it, that his position is this and that it will not hinder enough in the government”. “What does the third party leader do in these cases? It’s not inventing or speculating, it’s asking. I’m enlightened and pleased.” On Tuesday, Chega’s leader had said there was an articulation between PSD leader Luís Montenegro and the president of the republic, accusing the latter of forcing Montenegro to say that there will be no government deals with Chega. “The PSD must break away from the president of the republic and understand what it wants autonomously,” he challenged, pointing out that the “PSD either wants to rule with the PS or with Chega.”
Prior to the hearing, the PR itself felt the need to assure that “a president never interferes with party strategies”. “The last thing you should be doing is influencing the election of party leaders, the strategy of party leaders, the orientation of party leaders. That is not your role,” he said, speaking to journalists in Aveiro, on the sidelines of the celebrations of the 50th anniversary of the Third Congress of the Democratic Opposition.
Meanwhile, the Liberal Initiative declared itself available to integrate a government solution on the right side of the PS, said the party’s chairman Rui Rocha, with whom it can be understood and with whom it cannot. “IL has been very clear about who you get along with and who you don’t. [o Chega]and I am pleased that now, after some time, this clarification is also being made by other parties,” he said, addressing journalists on the sidelines of a visit to a nursery in the municipality of Oeiras.
The IL leader believed that the country needs “a transformation” as “some variety is not enough”. “It is not worth substituting one government for another if it is not to change policy, to change the country. That is what IL guarantees.”
