PCP aims to train 1000 executives and recruit new militants by the end of 2024

The PCP plans to train 1,000 cadres and recruit more militants by the end of 2024 as a strategy to reshape the party in light of the country’s realities.

According to the draft resolution of the National Conference, published in the Thursday edition of “Avante!”, the PCP’s aim is to strengthen its structure with “1000 new cadres, with emphasis on workers and other workers, young people and women, for regular tasks and party organizations” in the next two years.

The communist leadership believes that putting “the responsibility in the hands of more militants” and the role of “main characters and builders” will lead to “improvement of the style of work” and “wider action” by the party.

The recruitment of more militants is part of an effort to restructure the PCP and counter the fight “anti-democratic offensive, with a strong anti-communist slant” – one of the reasons for the party’s electoral decline that has been widely spoken by leaders in recent years.

Despite what he considered a “extraordinary reaction of the party collective in recent years that not only ensured the functioning of the organization as a whole, but also political intervention”the PCP lost nearly half of its deputies in two years (it elected ten in the 2019 legislature, but was reduced to six in the early elections in January this year).

The development and intensification of the “struggle of the workers and the popular masses”, through the work of closeness with the trade union structures, namely the CGTP, is also part of the objective of achieving the “alternative, patriotic and left-wing policies” – a expression that is almost always present in the speeches of the secretary general of the PCP, Jerónimo de Sousa – which the party advocates.

On the 16 pages that make up the conference’s motion for a resolution, the PCP praises the importance of boosting the party’s propaganda papers — “Avante!” and “The Militant” – as well as the need to ensure financial independence.

The National PCP Conference will take place from November 12-13 at the Alto do Moinho Pavilion, in Corroios, in the Municipality of Seixal, Setúbal District.

This is the fourth time the party has used this model of listening to militants, with the aim of reframing itself in the reality of the country. This year’s conference, entitled “Taking the initiative, strengthening the party, responding to new demands”, will examine both the national context – the absolute majority of the PS and the rise in the cost of living – and the international context – the uncertainty on the reorganization of the geopolitical framework, the expansion of NATO and what the communists consider to be the “confrontation policy” against Russia and China.
