PS finds PSD leader desperate and tries to hide political unpreparedness

The deputy general secretary of the PS opined this Friday that the recent political interventions of the chairman of the PSD reveal desperation, lack of preparation and institutional sense in applying “diversion tactics” “in the wake of populism”.

This criticism was voiced by João Torres at a press conference at the national headquarters of the PS, in response to Luís Montenegro’s allegations in Sintra, according to which the Prime Minister, António Costa, is revealing “political cowardice” by remaining silent regarding the controversy on the legal basis for the dismissal of the executive chairmen and board of directors of TAP.

From the perspective of the “number two” of the PS leadership, Luís Montenegro “he made absolutely unacceptable statements today, in fact, as is his prerogative in the leadership of the PPD/PSD, repeatedly failing to tell the truth to the Portuguese”.

In the case of TAP, in recent days, “It is trying artificially to put forward a new political fact with the parliamentary committee of inquiry, but it is good to remember that the PS voted for its constitution and could even have made it unfeasible”he said.

João Torres accused the PSD of seeking “diversions that clearly aim to conceal the disastrous privatization of TAP” by the second executive headed by Passos Coelho when it was about to fall in parliament in 2015.

“The PSD has now turned into a void of ideas and Luís Montenegro is absolutely desperate because of the unpreparedness that everyone recognizes. But desperation is a bad advisor and should assume the role that belongs to him, the role of leader of the opposition”he said, then contrasted the “institutional sense” of the Prime Minister, António Costa, with the political action of the President of the Social Democrats.

“The Prime Minister and the Government are responsible for respecting the Parliamentary Commission of Inquiry and do not comment on any hearing, document or proposal. Luís Montenegro should have the same sense of respect for the Assembly of the Republic and should not take advantage of the parliamentary commission of inquiry as a political weapon. Instead of honoring the institutional and historical significance of the PSD, this party follows the vocabulary, attitudes and behavior of the populists”he added.
