Lula da Silva: Russia has started the war against Ukraine, but peace is needed

Brazil’s president, Lula da Silva, said on Saturday that it is necessary to “form a group of countries that sit down at the table to discuss peace in Ukraine. He further stated that Russia has started “a war against Ukraine”, referring to a renewal of the UN Security Council.

In a joint press conference after a closed-door meeting with Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, President of the Republic, Lula da Silva referred that “Brazil wants to find a way to make peace”. And, reinforced, “it is better to find a way out at the negotiating table than a way out on the battlefield”. “War only destroys, it builds nothing,” he stressed, revealing that he will not go “neither to Russia nor to Ukraine” until there are talks and conditions in terms of making peace. However, Lula da Silva returned to criticize the European Union’s involvement in the conflict. “If you don’t make peace, you contribute to war,” he said. Referring to the fact that Olaf Scholz had asked Brazil for missiles, Lula da Silva said he did not accept the request because “if the missile killed anyone”, the country would be part of the war. However, the Brazilian president again said Brazil condemns the invasion and points to “the UN voices”, which he says show the country’s position in relation to the conflict.

“Russia was wrong. We all think Russia was wrong. It shouldn’t have invaded, but it did. Brazil does not want to take sides. He wants a group of countries to talk to,” he said.

And what is the position of Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa? According to the President of the Republic, in the conversation he had behind closed doors with Lula da Silva, he returned to “emphasize Portugal’s position: of condemnation of the violation of the territorial integrity of Ukraine and of solidarity with the peopleof the country. In his speech to the press conference, Portuguese President praised Lula da Silva, saying he “wouldn’t say better” than what Cavaco Silva said during Lula’s last official visit to Portugal 12 years ago: “Great leaders distinguish themselves through their ability to translate ideals into concrete achievements that mobilize hope.”
