Brazil and Portugal deplore “annexation” by Russia and ask for “just and lasting peace”

This position is contained in the joint statement signed by Portugal and Brazil at the end of the XIII Portuguese-Brazilian Summit, this Saturday, at the Centro Cultural de Belém in Lisbon. A statement released ahead of the press conference of Brazilian President Lula da Silva and Portuguese Prime Minister António Costa.

“The heads of government stressed their commitment to international law, the UN Charter and the peaceful resolution of conflicts. They deplored Russia’s violation of Ukraine’s territorial integrity and the annexation of parts of its territory as violations of international law,” reads the text.

The last part of the same text states that Portugal and Brazil “continued to underline the need to promote a just and lasting peace”.

Also regarding the war in Ukraine, Brasilia and Lisbon executives “deplored the loss of life and destruction of civilian infrastructure, as well as the immense human suffering and the worsening of the vulnerabilities of the global economy caused by the war”.

“They expressed concern about the global effects of the conflict on food and energy security, especially in the poorest regions of the planet,” he emphasizes.

Also in terms of the economic and social consequences of this conflict in Eastern Europe, Portugal and Brazil came together to support the full functioning of the Black Sea Cereals Initiative.

In the first points of the joint statement, António Costa and Lula da Silva “reaffirmed their unyielding commitment to the defense of effective multilateralism, based on international law and the Charter of the United Nations, and reiterated their strong support for international peace and security, for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of states”.

They also stressed the imperative and urgent need to face the global challenges of climate change and food security and contribute to sustainable development, poverty eradication and social inclusion.

On defense, the executives of Portugal and Brazil “expressed their satisfaction with the relationship between the respective ministries and the armed forces, highlighting the participation of Brazilian military personnel in the Portuguese contingent of the European Union training mission in the Central African Republic”.

With regard to cooperation in defense industries, the governments of Lisbon and Brasília “emphasized the importance of the joint development project for the KC-390, the first of five aircraft acquired by Portugal, which was presented in Beja in 2022 and is currently in the certification phase” since last March.

“Still in this context, they identified “unique opportunities to strengthen relations between the two countries, given the existing potential for cooperation, particularly in space, cyber defense, aviation, surveillance systems and radars,” he added.
