Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva said on Tuesday that he felt at home in Portugal and viewed April 25 as a “leap into the future” for the country towards “economic development with social justice”.
In his speech at the Assembly of the Republic, a welcoming ceremony that precedes the formal April 25 evocative session, Lula da Silva stated that April 25 “enabled Portugal to take a real look at the future”, by restore “civil liberties, citizens’ political participation, political democratization, labor rights and free trade union organization, creating the basis for economic development with social justice”.
“In recent days I have had the undeniable feeling of being at home here in Portugal, a feeling that I think is shared by all Brazilians living in Portugal and all Portuguese in Brazil,” Lula da Silva began in his speech, drawing applause from the majority of the deputies, while Chega’s deputies knocked on the tables and held up posters with the flags of Ukraine reading phrases like “Enough corruption”.
In view of this, the President of the Assembly of the Republic drew the attention of Portuguese deputies from the far-right party: “The deputies who wish to remain in the plenary must behave with courtesy, courtesy and the education required of any representative of the Portuguese people, no longer demean the institutions, no longer disgrace the name of Portugal”.
Before intervening, the Brazilian president signed the book of honor of the Assembly of the Republic and upon arrival at parliament, Lula da Silva was greeted by supporters who gathered in the area he entered.
On the other hand, there was a group opposed to the arrival of Lula da Silva, made up of supporters of his predecessor, Jair Bolsonaro, and elements related to Chega.
