Chega’s parliamentary leader says the party made a difference in the session with Lula da Silva

Chega’s parliamentary leader joined the party’s demonstration outside parliament on Tuesday to affirm that his party was making a difference by condemning the Brazilian president’s presence in Portugal.

Pedro Pinto was accompanied by the party’s other deputies, with the exception of the leader, André Ventura, who will join the demonstration once the formal session ends on April 25.

“We made a difference. We showed that there should be no tolerance for corruption,” Pedro Pinto said in a short speech to about a thousand participants in the demonstration organized by Chega and in which the Movimento Partido da Terra (MPT) took part. ) and of various associations of Brazilians in Portugal.

Criticism of Lula da Silva’s presence in Portugal, Pedro Pinto resorted to one of the main slogans of the demonstration: “Lula, thief, your place is in prison” — to ensure that the party’s fight against corruption continues unabated.

“If we don’t fight, one day we will see José Sócrates (former Portuguese prime minister accused in court) speak in parliament again,” said Pedro Pinto.

“We are on the right track to be a government,” concluded the parliamentary leader of the third Portuguese political force.

“Ventura go ahead, you’ve got your people here,” was the line that began to be shouted after Pedro Pinto, flanked by several of Chega’s deputies, finished his intervention.

The demonstrators, whose number has increased to about a thousand just before noon, occupy half of Avenida D. Carlos I, next to the intersection that gives access to the Assembly of the Republic.

If Lula da Silva’s arrival at the parliament, on the other side of the building, through Rua de São Bento, where there is another demonstration, but in support of the Brazilian president, went practically unnoticed, the protests increased in tone when it announced that the head of state was speaking in the hemicycle.

More noise was made when the organization of the demonstration reported that Chega parliamentarians were holding anti-corruption posters at the time Lula da Silva spoke, leading to the interruption of the intervention, with the Speaker of the Parliament, Augusto Santos Silva, expressing outrage expressed such behavior.

The noise increased even more when the moment came for the entourage of the Brazilian president to leave the Portuguese parliament.

Despite the fact that Lula da Silva has already left the Assembly of the Republic, the demonstrators of the protest organized by Chega are still in place, chanting the same slogans: “Lula, thief, your place is in prison” or “zero tolerance for corruption”. , to the sound of the drums of the group “Amigos da Borga” –, waiting for the party leader, André Ventura, to join, which will only happen after the end of the solemn commemoration of the 49th anniversary of the 25th of April.
