Chinese vice president visits Lisbon from May 7

China’s Vice President Han Zheng will visit Lisbon between May 7 and May 10, after representing Beijing at the coronation ceremony of King Charles III in the United Kingdom, an official government source confirmed to Lusa on Tuesday.

News of Han Zheng’s trip to Lisbon was reported by the weekly magazine Expresso. Contacted by Lusa, the Portuguese executive confirmed the visit of the Chinese High Representative, but did not provide details about the reasons for the trip and the respective agenda.

Before the visit to Portugal, Han Zheng is expected in London to attend the coronation of Charles III, according to British sources quoted by digital newspaper Politico and daily newspaper The Telegraph.

Han, recently appointed as his deputy by Chinese President Xi Jinping, was already in the government and in charge of the ruling party for affairs in Macau and Hong Kong in 2019, when demonstrations against the curtailment of civil rights were heavily suppressed by authorities in the former colony.
