PCP rules out early elections, but says it is prepared

The PCP secretary-general said on Thursday that the party is prepared for a possible early parliamentary election, but has ruled out this scenario for now, believing that this is also the view of the majority of the population.

“Going into elections, we are prepared. What we think is that this question is not on the agenda right now and in fact I think it is a long way from what the majority of our people understand the path should be”thought Paulo Raimundo, shortly before the start of a meeting of the leaders of the left parties in the European Parliament in Brussels.

The Communist General Secretary rejected entering into discussions to escalate “possible tensions” between the President of the Republic and the Prime Minister as they “divert attention from what is fundamental”: “Let’s focus on people’s problems, that’s what needs to be solved. If there’s an election, we’ll be prepared.”

Accompanied by the member of the Political Commission of the PCP Central Committee João Ferreira, a former member of the European Parliament, and by the two members of the party, Sandra Pereira and João Pimenta Lopes, the communist leader believed that “there is no reason” to dissolve the Assembly of the Republic, criticizing the “permanent assertion that there will be, there will not be, it’s today, it’s tomorrow, next year”.

According to Paulo Raimundo, the idea of dissolution is fueled by Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa.

“We can criticize the President of the Republic a lot, now there is one thing we cannot say, it is that the President has not spoken. In fact, if there is one thing he has done is talk about the situation, it cannot be said that he has hidden your thoughts,” he said.

Speaking to the President of the Republic, the Communist General Secretary praised “the gift of speech” and believed that “it is also necessary to take into account the [sua] opinion”.

“If the president asked my opinion, I would say what I said here: We must consider all our strength, all the tools at our disposal, to solve people’s problems. Those who listen to us are only concerned about whether or not there will be an election, because we talk about it every dayhe defended.

Paulo Raimundo recalled that in 2021, when parliament was dissolved due to the failure of the 2022 state budget proposal, “brutal blackmail was committed” in the name of political stability, but “after an absolute majority, there is instability”.

The PCP secretary-general devalued lunch between PSD presidents Luís Montenegro and IL president Rui Rocha on Wednesday, saying it is “normal” for the two right-wing parties to “find points of convergence”. accusing them of colluding with the interests of major economic groups.
