The president of the republic on Saturday believed that the Portuguese understood his statement on the political crisis and refused to make reinterpretations, underlining that this is the stage where he is “the last security fuse” of the political system.
Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa spoke to journalists at the Portuguese embassy in London, the city he traveled to for the coronation of King Charles III of England.
“What I had to say, I have said. That has been said. I do not intend to say anything on that matter today, nor in the days to come, nor in the weeks to come. The Portuguese, of course, listened and listened attentively and understood”he claimed.
The Portuguese head of state justified the decision “not just because he is abroad”, but because he believes that “a president’s role is not to interpret himself”.
“I try my best to be very clear, even in complicated matters,” he insisted, pointing out that he “covered everything I wanted to tackle”.
Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa recalled that he had “a phase” of his life where he was a commentator, but argued that now is not the time to be one: “This is the phase of being politically responsible. As I said , the system’s last political security fuse,” he stressed.
“I will not reread what I said, reinterpret, clarify, clarify. The Portuguese have heard, understood, understood, they certainly have their opinion on that,” he said.
On Thursday, the president of the republic promised in his statement that he will be “even more attentive and more involved in everyday life” to avoid conflict factors that deteriorate institutions and “not to resort to exceptional powers”.
The head of state described his disagreement with the Prime Minister’s decision to retain João Galamba as Infrastructure Minister as a “fundamental difference” and considered that this decision by António Costa has a cost “in credibility, reliability, authority of the Minister, the government and the state”.
“What has happened will have different consequences in the future. I will have to pay even more attention to the question of the political and administrative responsibility of those responsible, because until now I thought that in this area, with more or less temporal distance, agreement on the essentials. if not, there is a fundamental difference,” he considered.
“So, to avoid the emergence and growth of irrepressible and unwanted conflict factors, I will have to be even more attentive and more involved in my daily life, to avoid resorting to exceptional powers that the Constitution gives to grants me. me and those I can’t I can renounce,” he continued.
