Montenegro says PSD not ruling out parliamentary committee of inquiry into SIS performance

PSD president Luís Montenegro said on Tuesday that the party is not ruling out a parliamentary committee of inquiry into the actions of the Security Information Service (SIS) in recovering former deputy minister João Galamba’s computer.

“I would say we have not ruled out, we have not ruled out the possibility of having a parliamentary committee of inquiry specifically on this issue, but I think it is important at this time to emphasize that the parliamentary hearings are being held with the utmost urgency and that conclusions can already be drawn on this subject, even if they are preliminary,” said Luís Montenegro in Leiria, the district where this week the program “Sentir Portugal” continues.

In the margins of the Standing Political Commission meeting, Luís Montenegro started by saying that this is “a very serious situation and that there must be complete clarity”.

Hearings are currently taking place in parliament on this, many even at the request of the PSD and there is also a parliamentary committee of inquiry into everything involved in managing the TAP file where somehow, this episode also ended at to leave,” he said.

For the Social Democratic leader “there are then other options that parliament can also assess, namely whether it is worth extending the object of the current committee of inquiry to also be able to deal with this problem, instead it is set up a second commission of inquiry.

On Chega’s draft resolution recommending the resignation of Minister João Galamba, Luís Montenegro guaranteed that “the PSD will vote against, because this project is complete nonsense”.

“A sovereign body recommends another who has all authority to determine its composition [para] that some member of that sovereign body, in this case the government, ceases to function, that is nonsense,” he insisted.

Ensuring that the party is “at the forefront of denouncing the loss of authority and credibility of the Infrastructure Minister in order to continue his role”, the PSD president claimed that the Prime Minister, António Costa, had been killed by João Failing to fire Galamba or not accepting his resignation, “damaged the government, damaged the prime minister’s own authority” and “put a burden on this minister that will become unbearable over time.”

“Forcing the Assembly of the Republic to make such a recommendation is setting a precedent that makes no sense over the others,” he said, as it is “another demonstration of immaturity and irresponsibility.”

The Liberal Initiative will propose a parliamentary committee of inquiry into SIS’s performance in recovering former deputy minister João Galamba’s computer, the party’s parliamentary leader announced on Thursday.

The secretary-general of SIRP and the director of SIS will be heard in parliament on Thursday about the “legal framework” of SIS intervention in the recovery of the computer of a former government deputy.

This information appears in the agenda of the Assembly of the Republic, which indicates that the hearings will take place after the plenary session, with an indicative starting time of 5:30 p.m., both behind closed doors.

The SIRP Supervisory Board hearing is scheduled for today at 4 p.m., already scheduled last week for the presentation of the annual report for 2022, to which, at the request of the PSD, a working point has been added regarding the “alleged involvement directly of the information services, namely the SIS” in the recovery of the computer of the ex-deputy Frederico Pinheiro.

The hearing – which will also take place behind closed doors due to legal obligations – was eventually canceled last week due to delays in the work of the Committee on Constitutional Affairs, Rights, Freedoms and Guarantees.

In recent days, the Minister of Infrastructure has been involved in a controversy with his former deputy Frederico Pinheiro over information to be provided to the Parliamentary Commission of Inquiry into the political custody of TAP management.
