The former governor of Banco de Portugal decided to sue the prime minister, António Costa, in response to the head of government’s legal action. It is an allegation of political pressure on the banking sector regulator, involving Angolan businesswoman Isabel dos Santos.
Both Carlos Costa and the Prime Minister called on the President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, to testify in the respective legal proceedings.
“Not yet called for the announced civil suit, supposedly proposed by Dr. António Costa [primeiro-ministro], I inform you that I have already constituted my legal representatives (…) for the purpose of the specified contestation of the aforementioned civil petition, with simultaneous deduction of a counterclaim against Dr. António Costa, so that he retracts publicly the insulting statements he has made against me, thus restoring the truth of the facts, enumerating, among others, myself as witnesses, including those whom the author has declared, including the President of the Republic ” , says Carlos Costa , in a statement to Lusa.
The Prime Minister, António Costa, filed a civil lawsuit on April 27 against former Banco de Portugal governor Carlos Costa, asking that he be sentenced “to recant his statements” about pressure related to Isabel dos Santos.
A source linked to the trial confirmed to the Lusa agency that the action has been filed with the Lisbon Civil Court requesting “the conviction of Carlos Costa to withdraw the statements he made about BIC and Banif “.
