The PSD secretary-general said today that the party “will not accept any ethical or legal failure”, calling for speed in the judicial investigation into an alleged exchange of favors between the party and the PS in the 2017 municipal elections.
Speaking to journalists in parliament, Hugo Soares separated the legal and political plans regarding the report that aired Tuesday night on TVI/CNN.
“The first is that this investigation must be completed quickly. The PSD has been and will be absolutely unyielding in its defense of ethical decency, legality and democratic normality,” he said.
The PSD leader stressed that this process has taken “five or six years” and “needs to have a conclusion to really know what the allegations are and who is responsible for that behaviour”.
On a political level, Hugo Soares argued that it was necessary “to confirm some facts so that political consequences can be drawn from them”.
“And here I also want to make it absolutely clear, on behalf of the PSD: the PSD will be irreconcilable with any ethical failure or any failure of legality. We went in the past, this has been our behavior and we will in any case circumstances” , he said.
Hugo Soares did not directly respond to questions about whether the PSD maintained political confidence in deputy Carlos Eduardo Reis, or requests for the resignation of ministers Fernando Medina or Duarte Cordeiro, all named in the television inquiry and all denying any illegality.
“It is imperative that these facts be confirmed and this investigation terminated (…) The PSD has set this example and will always be unyielding in defending ethical decency, democratic normality and legality and will not fail in any way,” repeated Hugo Soares.
