Marisa Matias says left unity is fundamental to save shrinking democracy

Bloquista MP Marisa Matias this Friday defended the fight against the far right as a “daily task”, saying the unity of the left is essential to save a “shrinking” democracy, criticizing the right’s reiteration that “extremes are equal” .

During the traditional international session on the eve of the XII National Convention of BE, which takes place in Lisbon on Saturday and Sunday, Marisa Matias was the first to take the pulpit with a speech focused on the motto of this meeting: “the struggle for democracy ” .

“Democracy is shrinking a little bit everywhere and it is necessary to save it. The left, the unity of the left, is a fundamental part of this process of democratic rescue and we know very well that the left only grows when it is an alternative of ideas. ” and action”he stressed.

For the BE leader, “fighting the far right has become a daily task” as it is “a breeding ground for hate speech, brutal inequality, persecution of democracy and mockery of the poorest and more unprotected”.

Marisa Matias points out that currently “the extreme right wants to challenge the space of the protest”, accusing these parties of posing as “defenders of social interests” and living “from the growing discredit of people and their difficulties”.

“Fascism is a worm that comes in an apple. It either comes with carded boots or woolen feet”he quoted, noting that “the right follows them and tries to occupy their ideas and electoral spaces”.

However, in the BE MEP’s analysis, when the right is unable to occupy the space of the extreme right, it joins these parties.

“It is that same right wing that shamelessly repeats to exhaustion that the extremes are equal and that salvation is at the center. A fight for democracy continues through the dispute over the program for transforming society, fighting inequality, the unyielding defense of freedoms, but also for demonstrating the falsity of these claims”appealed.

For Marisa Matias, “It’s not because a lie is repeated over and over that it becomes the truth”.

“49 years after April 25, we know how difficult it was, how important and essential the struggle to conquer and defend democracy will be. It is a struggle the size of the world”he said.

Marisa Matias briefly presented the journey of the two international guests in this session, Guilherme Boulos (PSOL) and Younous Omarjee (France Insoumise), who followed her from the pulpit during a meeting that ended with the intervention of fellow MEP José Gusmão.
