FFMS debates fiscal policy. “These are transversal problems”

The Francisco Manuel dos Santos Foundation (FFMS) makes its debut at conferences abroad. The stage: Brussels; the theme: fiscal policy and reform of tax laws within the European Union (EU).

As explained to DN João Tiago Gaspar, director of studies at FFMS, the theme of the conference (entitled, in Portuguese, A very European puzzle: balancing budgets and promoting growth) “is transverse to various Western societies”. “A lot of the laws we have are produced, so to speak, at the European level, so the problems and big issues become transversal. Since the purpose of the FFMS is basically to analyze and look at our society, we thought it would be interesting to open up the theme to the European space as well.”, explains the person in charge. If you go to Brussels – “it is one of the capitals of the European institutions, so it made perfect sense”, he says – the aim is also “to internationalize the brand”. work we do is known in Portugal, but not abroad and that is what we also want”, defends João Tiago Gaspar.

With a scheduled start at 1pm local time (one more than Lisbon), the event will take place in the ACE Events space and will have as a partner average O place Politician who is also responsible for moderating and organizing one of the two panels (in Portuguese “How can Europe move from the Faeroeste budget to a new budget order?”). In this case, Portuguese MEP Margarida Marques, elected by the PS, is one of the speakers. “The choice was Politico’s responsibility, especially since the deputy is Vice-President of the Committee on Budgets in the European Parliament,” explains FFMS’s director of studies. There is also another Portuguese name at the event, with economist Ricardo Reis intervening in the second panel of the day.

Taking into account the theme of the conference, “it is expected to be a very lively debate”. In preparation for the event, explains João Tiago Gaspar, there was no prior study, with a different strategy: “We have not analyzed data on budget applications in specific countries, nor any previous study. What we did is we dated the crises and then looked at that data and prepared the panels based on that. The issue is becoming more and more pressing and the discussion must continue, also taking into account the application of the IRA [Inflation Reduction Guidebook ou Manual de Redução de Inflação] from the Biden administration, which is very protectionist.”What we want and even consider desirable is to draw up and put together a medium-term plan, looking at the European space, which has countries of different sizes, some of which have already intervened, and this must be taken into account”, concludes João Tiago Gaspar.
