The president of the republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, expressed his conviction on Wednesday that the parliamentary elections in Spain in July will not change the Spanish presidency of the European Union (EU), which is already underway at that time.
“It will be elections in the middle of the Spanish Presidency, but I am convinced that this will not change anything about the Spanish Presidency, which is very important to conclude dossiers such as the EU/Mercosur agreement, to make the European Union a good more sensitive to positions that the countries of the south have defended, and many together Portugal and Spain”declared Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, in the former royal arena, next to the Palace of Belém, in Lisbon.
Speaking to journalists on the margins of the program “Músicos no Palácio de Belém”, the head of state rejected comparisons between the political context of Spain and that of Portugal, referring to “the Spanish situation is a specific situation, which is at a different stage of the political cycle, which also has peculiar features”.
“That is why I will not attach any significant importance, except this: that it is fundamental for Portugal and it is fundamental for the EU that the Spanish Presidency goes well. And I am sure that it will go well, with Government A , Government B, Government C”he claimed.
Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa hopes “that it will be a good presidency, regardless of the decision of the Spanish electorate”.
The president of the republic declined to comment directly on Spain’s anticipation of parliamentary elections with about six months to July 23, announced by Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez after Sunday’s municipal and regional elections.
“Normally I do not comment on elections in other countries and in this case I do not make an exception. In this case I do not make an exception either. Each country is sovereign, has its own political situation. I follow very carefully what is happening in Spain, a very close neighbor of Portugal”he declared.
