The PS believed this Wednesday that it will be possible to overcome a “serious institutional crisis” in the Regulatory Entity for the Media (ERC) after the PSD indicated the names for that body, which will be discussed on 23 June will be voted on.
Speaking to journalists in the Assembly of the Republic, Leaders’ Conference spokeswoman Maria da Luz Rosinha announced that elections for the external bodies, including the ERC Regulatory Council, have been postponed to June 23.
Elections for the ERC had already been scheduled several times – including today – but were successively postponed due to the lack of nominations from the PSD, which announced their names today.
After the announcement of Maria da Luz Rosinha, the parliamentary leader of the PS, Eurico Brilhante Dias, considered that with the presentation of the names of the PSD “all the conditions are met so that on June 23 the four names” of the regulatory council of the ERC.
“We are in a position to overcome what the PS group considers to be a serious institutional crisis in the ERC, after the death of Mário Mesquita and after it has been practically impossible to hold these elections in recent months,” he said.
The PSD today appointed Pedro Gonçalves and Carla Martins as members of the Supervisory Board of the Entity Regulating the Media (ERC) and former deputy Carlos Abreu Amorim as members of the Commission on Access to Administrative Documents.
Pedro Gonçalves has been Executive Director of the Social Communications Regulatory Agency since 2018, in addition to being a University Professor, and Carla Martins, who has a PhD in Communication Sciences, has also been a member of the ERC’s technical staff since 2006, where she has been since 2019 coordinates the Transparency Unit of the Media.
The names of the PSD follow those presented by the PS at the beginning of April: Helena Sousa, professor of communication sciences at the University of Minho, and Telmo Gonçalves, responsible for data protection at the ERC and researcher in the field of study media and journalism.
The current Regulatory Council of the Media Regulatory Entity (ERC), chaired by Sebastião Póvoas, took office on December 14, 2017 after a five-year term that expired at the end of last year.
The Regulatory Board consists of five persons: president, vice president and three members. It is for the Assembly of the Republic to designate by resolution four of the members of the Regulatory Council, who co-opt the fifth element.
