Marcelo admits to having had the impression that the people did not want the dissolution of parliament

The president of the republic admitted on Friday that he knew the people did not want the dissolution of parliament, as in a democracy it is always possible for the government and the opposition to see the need for changes.

“I want to be very honest: I think there were a lot of commentators who wanted me to dissolve and I felt like people didn’t want me to dissolve, they really wanted me to draw the government’s attention to say what I said on day 04 [de maio]: ‘look, sometimes it is necessary to change what is not right before it is too late’. That’s what I meant, it was prevention”Marcelo justified.

The head of state spoke to journalists in Peso da Régua, in the district of Vila Real, where the celebrations for the Day of Portugal, Camões and the Portuguese Communities end on Saturday, and referred to the statement he made on May 4, after the Prime Minister’s resignation from the Minister of Infrastructure, João Galamba.

Marcelo said that on that occasion, people felt that it was not the time to “put the game down” because “it could have more costs than benefits”.

“I was aware of what many commentators were thinking: ‘It’s now, it’s time to enjoy it now, if not now, it’s in 15 days, or in three weeks and so on… Take the game down and start again’. And, on the other hand, they said the following: ‘no, it’s not just knocking the game down'”he stressed.

The president of the republic goes back to the speech he gave when the current government took office in March 2022, to point out that he had warned at the time that “an absolute majority has absolute responsibility”.

“That’s why it’s harder to have an absolute majority than not to have it, because if you don’t have an absolute majority, there are always multiple justifications: because party A didn’t support it, because party B didn’t support it, because C didn’t support it and all that… When you have an absolute majority, there are no such justifications”he underlined.

For the head of state, if you have an absolute majority, “there’s only one reason not to let things happen: there are problems with those in power.”

“Looks like a gift [ter maioria absoluta], but it is a gift with a lot of responsibility. The people say, when they give this gift, ‘well, I now give you all the power to do what you must do. But it does! Because if you don’t, I’ll be more demanding than the time you could say, ‘Look, I couldn’t because they wouldn’t let me do it'”marked.

When asked if the government still has time to change its hand, Marcelo replied that “it is always possible in politics, both in the opposition and in government, to realize that there are new challenges, that there are changes that to be made, sometimes it’s people, sometimes it’s ideas, other times it’s projects”.

“I know it’s hard: I’m the age I am, and I know it’s harder to change at 74 than it is at 64, 54, 44, 34. This is the challenge facing everyone who serves others. – serve the people – is to see at any time: ‘what can I do better each day than what I have done so far?'”he claimed.
