“In the midst of joys and sorrows we make Portugal”. This morning, from Peso da Régua, in the district of Vila Real, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa praised Portugal’s role in the world, but underlined how much needs to be done in the country: “We can never give up on creating more wealth, more equality, more cohesion, distribute this wealth with more justice”. Starting with the territory itself: “We want the Pesos da Régua to become as important in our interior as the Lisbons, the Ports, the Coimbras…”.
In the Portugal Day speech, with the Douro River in the background, the head of state defended that “only unity makes strength” and pointed to the Douro itself as an example of willpower, a “portrait of the Portugal we want” . .
Emphasizing the universal character of the country, of the Portuguese who “left more than six centuries ago and never ceased to come and go, leave and return” – which, as a result, creates a responsibility to “understand that we must receive others ” -Oh President of the Republic underlined that “we are like this, poor in the beginning”, but “capable of the best”. “There are ten million of us here, but we are worth much, much more,” said Marcelo, pointing to the Douro as an example of this ability to conquer, “which we have made navigable again”.
“We have a greater weight in the world than our terrestrial territory”, called on the President of the Republic, before an audience that included the Prime Minister, António Costa, and the President of the Assembly of the Republic, Augusto Santos Silva.
