IL. “More than pruning”, Portugal needs “a new tree”.

The President of the Liberal Initiative (IL), Rui Rocha, defended this Saturday in Porto, in response to the speech of the President of the Republic on June 10, that the country needs “more than a pruning” “a new tree ” .

“The tree is infected and that is why more than the pruning recommended by the President of the Republic, we need a new tree in the country,” Rui Rocha said today at IL’s national headquarters, in Porto, in response to the speech of Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa.

This Saturday, in his speech at the military ceremony for the Day of Portugal, Camões and the Portuguese Communities, in Peso da Régua (Vila Real district), the President of the Republic considered it necessary to “remove the dead branches that cover the entire tree” , warning that, only if you don’t want to is that “Portugal won’t be forever”.

Rui Rocha interpreted the words of Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa and understood the “branches to be cut as ministers”, in the “metaphor that the President of the Republic wanted to make”, while, in addition to sustainability in the government of the Minister of Infrastructure, João Galamba, also that of the Minister of Agriculture, Maria do Céu Antunes, or the Minister of Foreign Affairs, João Gomes Cravinho.

“There are several branches of this government that are not viable, they have already shown that they have no conditions to be in government,” he defended.

What is needed, according to the liberal leader, is a new ‘boom’ “that restores the confidence of the Portuguese, that brings transparency, that brings economic growth, that offers opportunities to the Portuguese and that therefore ends this cycle of degradation, of decline, in which the land is submerged”.

Continuing the references to botany, Rui Rocha also considered “the PS and its government” as a “kind of weed that occupies everything around it”, such as the state apparatus, judiciary or economic regulators.

Asked about the boos targeted by Infrastructure Minister João Galamba today in Peso da Régua, the liberal leader believed that the minister is “used by the Prime Minister to provoke the President of the Republic and the country”.

For Rui Rocha, the Portuguese “responded vociferously to this provocation today”.

“The Prime Minister has an absolute majority, he believes that this gives him absolute power, he does not listen to anyone, he does not listen to the opposition, he does not listen to the President of the Republic, he does not listen to the Portuguese”, thought he.

The deputy also said it was necessary “to come to the conclusion that the branches are no longer the problem”, to “prevent Portugal from growing as it could and should” or to “contribute negatively to the development of the country”. but rather “the person who has all this in common, who is the Prime Minister”, António Costa.

Regarding Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa’s speech, Rui Rocha also said that the IL “agrees” with “the diagnosis” of the head of state that there are sometimes “more reasons to leave than to stay” in the country, poverty and “the country’s inability to generate growth”.
