The president of the republic on Wednesday said the government’s proposals on IRC and salary increases are in line with “a search for balance”, but said they are “in good shape” given the uncertainty we are experiencing.
“All bids that are now being made are bids subject to change”Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa told reporters in Sausalito, California.
When asked whether he believes it is possible to maintain an annual wage increase of 4.8% on average until 2026, as proposed by the government, the head of state replied: ‘I don’t know. Nobody knows. Frankly, nobody knows.’
According to the President of the Republic, there are “conditions” to the proposals presented “at this moment, on this precise day of this precise month”because it is not known whether the situation will “get worse or not and get worse”.
“I know that people, who are experiencing what they are experiencing now, have expectations of compensation for what they are experiencing and what they are afraid of living in the future. What will that future be, how will it be projected? this future, because that is what is difficult to do in a very rigid way”strengthens.
He said the government’s proposals for a selective cut in the IRC and annual salary increases of 4.8% between 2023 and 2026 correspond to “a search for balance, both at one level and the other”.
“But the decisive word in one part, that is the tax part, belongs to parliament. And in the other part, it belongs to social dialogue and belongs to economic reality, as the private sector will face this reality must see, it is not just public service wages”he added.
