The by-election of the President of the General Assembly of the Portuguese Professional Football League (LPFP), following the resignation of Mário Costa, will take place on June 23.the organization said in a statement on Thursday.
“Liga Portugal informs that a General Assembly will be held on June 23, 2023 for the by-election of the President of the Board of Directors of the General Assembly for the remaining term of office corresponding to the four-year period 2023- 27”, informed the LPFP, adding Applications must be submitted by June 19.
The election will take place at Liga de Clubes headquarters in Porto, less than a month after the governing bodies took office for Pedro Proença’s final term as president of the organization, following the resignation of Mário Costa, as seen in an emergency meeting on Wednesday.
It concerns the investigation led by the Foreigners and Borders Service (SEF) into Mário Costa and the football academy to which he is affiliated, in Riba D’Ave, municipality of Famalicão, district of Braga, on suspicion of human trafficking.
The Office of the Attorney General of Porto indicated on Wednesday 14 June that 33 minors have been removed from the football academy and that adults have also been sent to reception units.
In a note published on its page, the public prosecutor’s office states that the minors were removed after a pronounced intervention by the competent authorities and “because they were in a dangerous situation”.
According to an SEF source, 114 football players from South America, Africa and Asia have been identified as being in the country illegally.
