Semedo and Palhinha miss the duel with Iceland

Nélson Semedo and João Palhinha will miss Portugal’s Euro 2024 football qualifiers against Iceland next Tuesday in Reykjavik after being omitted from the final list sent to UEFA.

Semedo and Palhinha, who were already absent from the national team’s Monday training at Laugardalsvöllur Stadium, were excluded from the list of 23 players included in Roberto Martínez’s squad for the fourth round of Group J.

Palhinha started against Bosnia (3-0) last Saturday, while Semedo was released in the course of the second half, in the match played at Estádio da Luz, in Lisbon.

In any case, this means that coach Roberto Martínez will have to make a change in the first team, where the presence of Cristiano Ronaldo is already certain, who will complete his 200th international match for Portugal.

Iceland-Portugal, from the fourth round of Group J qualifying for Euro2024, is scheduled for 19:45 (18:45 local time) and will be refereed by Germany’s Daniel Siebert.

The ‘quinas’ team leads the group with nine points, followed by Slovakia with seven and Luxembourg, third with four. Bosnia and Iceland follow with three, fourth and fifth respectively, while Liechtenstein is last with zero.

Only the top two in the group will qualify for the Euro2024 final round, which will take place in Germany.
