Matilde Rodrigues guarantees a medal for Portugal in the muaythai of the Europeans

The Portuguese fighter Matilde Rodrigues secured this Sunday another medal for Portugal in muaythai at the Krakow 2023 European Games, advancing to the semifinals with -57 kg, as Gonçalo Noites had already done (-71 kg).

Matilde Rodrigues, 19, beat Anne Sandegaard of Denmark 30-27, in three rounds, and advanced to the semifinals, where she will face Finland’s Miina Sirkeoja on Monday for a spot in Tuesday’s final.

Each muaythai weight class in Myslenice, on the outskirts of Krakow, has eight fighters and awards four medals (one gold, one silver and two bronze).

The young woman equaled the feat of Gonçalo Noites in -71 kg, who already assured that they will increase the Portuguese heritage in the test and in combat sports, after the bronze of Ana Cruz in kata, a karate discipline.

Filipa Oliveira was the first Portuguese in the competition at the Myslenice Arena, losing to the Georgian Elene Loladze with -54 kg, while Luís Morais, with -91 kg, fell by ‘knock out’.

Portugal has so far added nine podiums in Krakow 2023, specifically three golds, three silvers and three bronzes, the last of which was achieved today by the paddle tennis duo Afonso Fazendeiro / Miguel Oliveira, in addition to two other metals already insured, in muaythai.

The third edition of the European Games runs until July 2 in Krakow and in the Polish region of Malopolska, with 30 sports on the program and 48 participating countries, including Portugal, which has a delegation of more than two hundred athletes.
