This Sunday, the President of the Republic congratulated the participation of the Portuguese athletes in the 2023 European Games and noted that it was the “best result” of a national mission in the event.
In a note published on the official website of the Presidency of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa says he will continue “with pleasure and contentment these days of competition”, which took place in Krakow and in the Malopolska region, in Poland, highlighting the ” Individual and collective performances of a high level of representation of the national colors”.
“’Team Portugal’ in Kraków-Malopolska, made up of 206 athletes who competed in 23 sports, obtained 16 podiums with 3 gold, 7 silver and 6 bronze medals, in addition to 36 rankings between 4th and 8th place, in what was the best result of a National Mission in the event”, underlines the head of state.
For Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, “the dedication, effort and commitment shown bode well that, at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games, ‘Team Portugal’ can continue and improve the results obtained”.
“To the Portuguese Olympic Committee, to the Federations, Clubs, coaches, technical teams and families, whose support is essential, the President of the Republic, on behalf of Portugal and the Portuguese people, expresses his satisfaction with the achievements and leaves a word of encouragement, wishing everyone many personal and sporting congratulations”, he concludes.
The note lists all the medals won by Portugal, starting with the three gold medals: Auriol Dongmo (Athletics, shot put), Messias Baptista (Canoeing, K1 200) and the Teresa Portela/Kevin Santos duo (Canoeing, K2 200 mixed ).
The seven silver medals went to Fernando Pimenta (canoeing, K1 500), Gonçalo Noites (muaythai, -71kg), Isaac Nader (athletics, 1500m), João Coelho (athletics, 400m), Marcos Freitas (table tennis ), Matilde Ferreira , (Muaythai, -57 kg) and Miguel Frazão (Fencing, sword).
The six bronze medals went to the women’s beach soccer team, the women’s table tennis team, the men’s shooting team, the duo Afonso Fazendeiro/Miguel Oliveira, (paddle tennis, men’s pairs), Ana Cruz ( Karate, tasting) and Francisca Laia (Canoeing, K1 200).
In the 2019 edition, in Minsk, Portugal had won 15 medals (three golds, six silvers and six bronzes) and, before that, in Baku 2015, in the debut of this competition, there were three golds, four silvers and three bronzes.
The third edition of the European Games ends today in Krakow and in the Polish region of Malopolska, with 30 sports on the program and 48 participating countries, including Portugal, which had a delegation of more than two hundred athletes.
