Number of athletes registered in the FPF reaches a new record

The Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) closed the 2022/23 season with a record number of 224,501 federated and recreation and leisure players, 16,446 more than last season, the entity revealed.

Of this new maximum, 208,888 are male practitioners and 15,613 female, which represents an increase of 13,980 and 2,466 athletes, respectively, compared to the previous season.

Among the federated practitioners -currently there are 217,379- there is a growth of more than 17,000 athletes than at the end of last season, and an increase of close to 14% compared to five years ago.

“The growth indicators in the women’s sector are notorious and are around 34% compared to the 2018/19 season. This season closed with 15,414 federated players”, highlighted the entity chaired by Fernando Gomes, specifying that there are more than 2,591 athletes than in 2021/22.

The increase in the number of federated athletes in the FPF has been constant, with the exception of the 2020/21 season, due to the covid-19 pandemic. That season, there was a fall of 127,223 practitioners, but there was a recovery of 199,616 athletes in the following season.

According to the data presented by the federation, of the 217,379 members who finished the season, 178,285 are from soccer, 37,143 from futsal and 1,597 from beach soccer.

In the Walking Football modality, which had its first National Festival last weekend in Cidade do Futebol, there are already 354 players registered in the FPF.
