Danish cyclist Mad Pedersen (Lidl-Trek) won stage eight of the Tour de France on Saturday, marked by the retirement of Mark Cavendish, with Jonas Vingegaard (Jumbo-Visma) defending the lead on the eve of the finish in Puy the Dome.
In a run in which the British rider from Astana fell out due to a fall, the 2019 long distance world champion triumphed at the end of the 200.7 kilometers between Libourne and Limoges, in 04:12.26 hours, ahead of the Belgian Jasper Philipsen (Alpecin – Deceuninck ) and Wout van Aert (Jumbo-Visma), second and third respectively.
Vingegaard, who had a quiet day defending the yellow today, faces a tough test on Sunday in stage nine, which will link Saint-Léonard-de-Noblat with the Puy de Dôme special category, a total of 182.4 kilometers, for which he will start 25 seconds ahead of Slovenian Tadej Pogacar (UAE Emirates), second overall, and 1.34 minutes ahead of Australian Jai Hindley (BORA-hansgrohe), who is third.
