Max Verstappen takes pole position for British GP

Dutch driver Max Verstappen (Red Bull) won his seventh pole position of the season on Saturday at the British Grand Prix, the 11th round of 2023.

The current world champion set his best time of 1.26.720 minutes, leaving Britain’s Lando Norris (McLaren) in second place, at 0.241 seconds, with Australian Óscar Piastri (McLaren) in third, at 0.372.

It was Max Verstappen’s seventh pole position in 10 races during the season – the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix was canceled on the sixth round, so only 10 of the 11 races took place – the 27th of his career and fifth consecutive.

“We know we have a fast car, so we have to give it 100%,” Verstappen stressed at the end of a session that started with rain, but with the track drying up over time.

This time the Ferraris beat the two Mercedes, with Monegasque Charles Leclerc (Ferrari) in fourth, 0.416s, with his teammate, Spaniard Carlos Sainz (Ferrari), in fifth, 0.428.

Britain’s George Russell (Mercedes) was sixth, followed by teammate and compatriot Lewis Hamilton.

More lucky was the Mexican Sérgio Pérez (Red Bull), who, despite the second fastest time in free practice, did not get further than 16th position.

The British GP race will be held on Sunday.

Max Verstappen arrives in the championship lead at this race, with 229 points, against 148 for Sérgio Pérez, who is second.
