Former Dutch goalkeeper Edwin Van der Sar, who suffered a brain hemorrhage last Friday, is now out of danger, although he remains hospitalized, Ajax announced Tuesday.
“Edwin is still in intensive care, but his condition is stable. His life is no longer in danger,” the Amsterdam club revealed in a statement sent at the request of the former player’s wife.
Annemarie Van der Sar also said that whenever she visits her husband, Van der Sar manages to communicate.
“He needs patience and to see how his condition evolves,” added Annemarie Van der Sar.
The 52-year-old former Ajax and Manchester United player was on vacation on a Croatian island when he began to feel unwell. In May, he resigned as Ajax’s general manager, a role he had held since 2016, following the club’s worst season in 14 years, finishing third behind Feyenoord and PSV Eindhoven.
Considered one of the best goalkeepers of his generation, Van der Sar defended the goal for Ajax between 1990 and 1999, being part of the team that won the Champions League in 1995. Later, he played for Juventus between 1999 and 2001 and for Fulham, from 2001 to 2005, before moving to Manchester United, where he stayed from 2005 to 2011.
During this time at the English club, he won another Champions League, in 2008. Edwin Van der Sar also played 130 games with the Dutch team and started two World Cups: in France, in 1998, and in Germany, in 2006.
