In 2022/23, FC Porto met the goals of the fair game formed with UEFA, European football’s governing body revealed on Friday that it had threatened to ban the club from continental competitions for three seasons.
In a statement published on its official website, UEFA said that the national runners-up have “achieved the goal”, having already received a “suspensive waiver” from the club’s financial control committee in previous seasons.
The Belgians from Anderlecht also had to deal with a situation similar to that of FC Porto, but they did not respect the foreseen agreement and were punished with a fine of 100,000 euros.
In September 2022, at the start of last season, UEFA reported that the blue and white club “failed slightly” to meet the conditions set out in the fair game financial.
As a result, UEFA’s financial control committee has decided to fine €100,000 and exclude the club from the European competitions it will qualify for over the next three seasons unless the aggregated result for the financial years 2019, 2020, 2021 and 2022 are in line with the financial balance sheet requirements,” the Nyon, Switzerland-based organization stated at the time.
Subject since 2017 to the club account control mechanism applied by UEFA, FC Porto SAD had in February this year presented a negative result of 9.891 million euros (ME) in relation to the first half of last season.
In 2022/23, the team led by Sérgio Conceição failed to rehabilitate the title of national champions, but won the Taça de Portugal, the Taça da Liga and the Supertaça Cândido de Oliveira and also reached the round of 16 of the Champions League.
