Van der Sar has already left intensive care after a cerebral haemorrhage

Former Dutch international Edwin van der Sar, who suffered a brain haemorrhage while on holiday in Croatia two weeks ago, has been released from intensive care and is expected to return home next week.

The information was given by himself, with the former Ajax and Manchester United goalkeeper posting a photo still smiling in the hospital bed next to his wife Annemarie.

“I am no longer in intensive care. I am still in hospital, but I hope to be home next week and take the next step in my recovery.” reported the former player, 52 years old, on the social network Instagram.

By May, Edwin van der Sar had left as general manager of Ajax, a position he has held since 2016 and the club’s worst season after 14 years, with the Amsterdam emblem finishing third in the league, behind Feyenoord and PSV Eindhoven.

Regarded as one of the greatest goalkeepers of all time, Van der Sar excelled at Ajax between 1990 and 1999, a period in which he won his first Champions League and reached his second with Manchester United (2007/08).

Van der Sar also represented Juventus (1999/2001), Fulham (2001/2005) and VV Noordwijk, the club at the start (1989/90) and end (2015/16) of his career.
