Vingegaard closer to title retention after bad Pogacar day

Danish cyclist Jonas Vingegaard (Jumbo-Visma) won almost six minutes from Tadej Pogacar this Wednesday, after the Slovenian of UAE Emirates ran into difficulties in the 17th stage, won by Austrian Felix Gall (AG2R Citroën).

The 25-year-old Austrian made his debut to win the Tour by being the best at the end of the 165.7 kilometers between Saint-Gervais Mont-Blanc and Courchevel, over the Col de la Loze, the highest point of this edition , after 04:49.08 crossed the finish line, ahead of the Briton Simon Yates (Jayco AlUla), second at 34 seconds, and the Spaniard Pello Bilbao (Bahrain Victorious), third at 01.38 minutes.

Vingegaard was fourth, 01.52 behind the winner, and extended his overall lead to 07.35 minutes over Pogacar, who had a day to quickly forget, losing 07.37 to Gall at the finish. Still, the Slovenian held onto his second place, while his British team-mate Adam Yates closed the podium at 10.45am.

On Thursday, the 18th stage links Moûtiers to Bourg-en-Bresse, covering a total of 184.9 kilometres, largely flat.
