The Portuguese Tiago Abiodun is crowned European champion of table tennis sub-15

Portugal’s Tiago Abiodun won the men’s singles under-15 European table tennis title today, following the Europeans held in Gliwice, Poland, with Portugal notching four podium finishes in the competition.

Against the Polish Patryk Zyworonek, Abiodun, considered one of the world’s promises in this age group and second seed, won 4-1, by partials of 5-11, 11-6, 11-7, 11-5 and 11-7.

The young Portuguese, runner-up in the world in mixed pairs sub-15, conquers a gold that, for Portugal, Marcos Freitas had already achieved, in Moscow 2002.

The son of Bode Abiodun, from Sporting, still has a bronze for men’s teams in the 2021 World Cup, adding another outstanding result today, especially since he had already won in Gliwice in the team competition, taking gold together with Carlos Gonçalves and Dinis Ye.

Previously, he had lost to Zyworonek in the men’s doubles final, in which he won silver alongside Austrian Julian Rzihauschek, losing to his singles rival and Mateusz Sakowicz 12-10, 11-9, 3-11, 11-4.

Júlia Leal reached bronze with the Romanian Andreea Baiasu, after losing to the French Nina Guo Zheng and Leana Hochart 11-8, 11-3 and 11-7 in the semifinals, closing the tournament for Portugal with a positive balance of four medals, two gold, one silver and one bronze.
