Former English international soccer player Trevor Francis, author of the goal that gave Nottingham Forest the conquest of the European Cup for Clubs in the 1978/79 season, has died at the age of 69, the victim of a heart attack, the family announced on Monday.
Trevor Francis, who died in Spain, where he alternated residence with England, became the first British player to reach the million dollar barrier (903,123.09 thousand euros) when he moved from Birmingham to Nottingham Forest in 1979.
Shortly after, he was decisive in Forest’s victory in the final of the European Cup, predecessor of the Champions League, by scoring the goal that allowed the English team to beat Malmö, 1-0, in a match held in the German city of Munich.
Trevor Francis, who has made 52 appearances for England, missed the revalidation of the title in the highest European club competition the following year due to injury, in which Nottingham Forest beat Hamburg in the final, also 1-0, in a match played in Madrid, refereed by the Portuguese António Garrido.
