Interior Minister José Luís Carneiro said Monday that the action of the Public Security Police (PSP) was “undeniable” in identifying Benfica supporters for disturbances in Braga, after Saturday’s game in Guimarães.
“The security forces have taken impeccable action. In a very short time, they identified the identities of those who violated the law and gave the competent authorities the duty to punish or not punish attitudes or behaviour. Therefore, in a very short time, they showed great effectiveness, as has happened in all the unexpected and unexpected circumstances that have arisen”stated Jose Luis Carneiro.
The PSP said it had identified 39 Sport Lisboa e Benfica supporters last Sunday for disturbances in the historic center of Braga after the game in Guimarães on Saturday night.
In a statement, the PSP’s Braga district commander said that “explosions of pyrotechnic devices, carried out by a significant group of young people dressed in black, while singing” were recorded around 11:45 PM. The incident “caused alarm and panic among people visiting recreational areas” in the historic center of the city of Braga, the statement said.
On the sidelines of a visit to the Foreigners and Borders Service’s service station for British citizens in Porto, José Luís Carneiro addressed journalists on the responsibility of citizens in favor of security.
“Let’s be aware of the following: only a society and citizens with an attitude and behavior of responsibility will enable us to live more safely. Safer conditions, whether in sports, in nightlife, in safety or We cannot want a police officer for every citizen, and that is not desirable, but for that every citizen and every citizen must fulfill his duties.”Carneiro summarized.
José Luís Carneiro noted that the “necessity” for all of society to have the “consciousness” that sport should be a “celebration” and a “demonstration of the improvement of social life” is clear.
Sport “cannot be a permanent demonstration of the settling of scores between groups that want to and have often questioned the tranquility of the football fields themselves,” he concluded.
“We have a very positive view of sport about the importance it has for the formation of the younger strata, for the formation of a freer society. Because sport can often convey fundamental messages, even of peace. the transition of South Africa, where Nelson Mandela made national sport, sport king, which was the fundamental message of peace and reconciliation”he added.
The PSP launched a police intervention, through agents who were in Braga, “strengthened by others who had moved from Guimarães”.
The operation intercepted the group, which was taken to the buildings of the PSP district command in Braga, where 39 “persons involved in the informal movement of the SLB, mainly living in the Lisbon area”, were identified.
