Bronny James, 18, the oldest son of NBA star LeBron James, is in stable condition after suffering a cardiac arrest while training with his college basketball team in Los Angeles, his family said Tuesday.
“Yesterday, Bronny James went into cardiac arrest during training,” a family spokesperson said in a statement to AFP.
The medical team managed to treat Bronny and take him to hospital. He is now stable and is out of the Intensive Care Units (ICU). We ask for respect and privacy for the James family and will update the media as more information becomes available,” the statement read. “LeBron and Savannah intend to publicly express their deepest gratitude and appreciation to the University of Southern California medical and athletic team for their great work and dedication to the safety of their athletes.”
News site TMZ.com reported that James was unconscious before being taken to hospital after the heart incident.
Bronny James committed to play for the USC Trojans in May after becoming one of the top contenders in college basketball in the United States.
His father — the NBA’s all-time leading scorer, four-time champion and four-time MVP — has long spoken of his desire to extend his career so he can play in the pro league with his son.
The teen star could be eligible for the NBA Draft after one season with the Trojans.
Some analysts have already identified him as a likely top 10 selection in the 2024 NBA Draft. Bronny James will turn 20 in October 2024, the same month the 2024-25 NBA season begins.
