The Government decided this Thursday to issue a commemorative medal of the first participation of the Portuguese team in a women’s soccer World Cup, stressing that it is a “remarkable milestone” for the promotion of gender equality.
“In this way, the Government intends to give special prominence to the first presence of the women’s A team, whose players came to be known as ‘the Navigators’, in the final phase of a competition,” said the Secretary of State for the Presidency of the Council of Ministers, André Moz Caldas, at a press conference in Lisbon.
The official stressed that the participation of the women’s team “represents a remarkable milestone for the promotion of gender equality through sport, in the various dimensions that it also pursues: the fight against inequalities and the respect, protection and promotion of human rights”.
This medal had already been announced by the Prime Minister, António Costa, on the day the women’s team returned to Portugal, on August 3. In a message posted on the social network X (formerly Twitter), the Chief Executive had said that the medal was intended to mark a “historical moment”.
Last Tuesday, Portugal concluded its first participation in a women’s World Cup, by staying in the group stage of the competition that takes place in Australia and New Zealand, after drawing 0-0 with the United States, two-time world champions, in the Third day of Group E.
The Quinas debuted in the Women’s World Cup in its ninth edition, after two participations in the European Championships, in 2017 and 2019, with a 1-0 defeat against the Dutch, but, adding later, the first victory in their history in the final phase, with the victory against the Vietnamese by 2-0, with goals from Telma Encarnação and Kika Nazareth.
