Roberto Mancini resigns as Italy coach

Transalpine coach Roberto Mancini resigned as Italian coach, a position he had held since May 2019 and on his way to winning the European Championship in 2021, the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) announced this Sunday.

“The FIGC was informed on Saturday evening of Roberto Mancini’s resignation,” the Italian federation said in a statement, which did not specify the reasons for this decision.

Mancini, 58, has no replacement for now, but the FIGC promises a decision soon.

“Due to the important commitments of the selection, namely the Euro2024 qualifiers with North Macedonia and Ukraine on September 10 and 12, the FIGC will announce the name of the new coach in the coming days,” the federation announced.

According to the Italian press, Luciano Spaletti, who led Napoli to their third Serie A title last season, could be Mancini’s successor.

Roberto Mancini’s resignation comes as a surprise, as the FIGC announced earlier this month that the then-Italian coach would also become the supervisor of the under-20 and under-21 transalpine teams.

Mancini succeeded Luigi di Biagio in May 2018 and his highlight was winning the European Championship in 2021, while failing to qualify for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, four years after Italy had already failed the 2018 World Cup. Cup in Russia.

In total, he had 37 wins, 15 draws and nine defeats, in a journey that also included a third-place finish in the 2022/23 edition of the League of Nations.
