Chelsea and Liverpool, with the Portuguese international Diogo Jota in the starting eleven, drew 1-1 this Sunday, in London, in the first major game of the English Football League, on the opening day of the competition.
At Stamford Bridge, Colombian winger Luís Díaz, formerly of FC Porto, gave the team an advantage redsin the 18th minute, but the Frenchman Axel Disasi restored equality, in the 38th minute, in the first official match of the Argentine coach Maurício Pochettino in charge of the blues.
Diogo Jota started for Liverpool, being replaced by the Uruguayan Darwin Núñez, former Benfica striker, in the 66th minute.
This was the seventh consecutive tie between the two emblems in official matches within 90 minutes.
Tottenham and Brentford draw
Also today, Tottenham opened the 2023/24 edition of the Premier League with a draw (2-2) in neighboring Brentford, in the first match of Australian coach Ange Postecoglou and after the departure of now former captain Harry Kane.
In the first London derby of the season, all the goals of the match were scored during the first half, with Argentina’s Romero, after 11 minutes, and Brazil’s Emerson Royal, at 45+4, scoring for the spurs (eighth classified in 2022/23), with assistance from reinforcement Maddison (ex-Leicester City) in both candidacies.
For Brentford, ranked ninth last season, the Cameroonian Mbeumo, in the 26th minute, from a penalty, and the Congolese Wissa, in the 36th, scored the goals for the locals.
The opening day of the Premier League ends this Monday with the Manchester United-Wolverhampton match.
