Tennis player Nick Kyrgios will try to drop charges against him citing mental health issues, the Australian press reported Tuesday, quoted by AFP.
Kyrgios’ lawyer appeared on behalf of the athlete at a hearing at the court of the Australian Capital Territory, where the Australian tennis player is charged with assault.
Kyrgos, 27, was not required to attend the hearing and is in Tokyo to participate in the Japanese Open.
The attorney, Michael Kukulies-Smith, asked for a postponement to allow time for a mental health assessment.
Kukulies-Smith said his client’s mental health issues were known and Kyrgios would try to withdraw the complaint.
The Wimbledon finalist wrote an Instagram post earlier this year about his mental health issues and his struggle with depression.
“I felt like I couldn’t talk to or trust anyone,” wrote, along with an image of her from 2019. “I’ve had those moments when it felt like these positive energy vibes would never materialize”he added.
The number 20 in the world is playing in his first tournament since losing in the quarterfinals of the US Open last month.
About the lawsuit, Kyrgios said on Monday that he had been working on it “for months” and living from day to day. “There’s a lot that I have under control and I’m taking all measures and handling it off the pitch. I’m just doing what I can and I’m here in Tokyo to just play good tennis, continue this momentum and try to do my job.” do, namely play tennis and play well”he emphasized.
The Australian is favorite to win the first round against Taiwanese Tseng Chun-hsin, who is in 87th place in the world ranking.
Kyrgios leapt into the limelight in 2014, when he was just 19, by beating Rafael Nadal at Wimbledon.
