The coach of the England women’s team will be appointed to the technical command of the men’s team. Sarina Wiegman has so far led England to the women’s World Cup final and the English soccer federation is studying the possibility of the coach replacing Gareth Southgate in the men’s team.
The news was announced by ESPN, who reported that the English soccer federation and Mark Bullingham, general director of the English Soccer Association (FA), confirmed this possibility.
“Sarina is doing a brilliant job in the women’s national team. I don’t like it when they say we have to have the ‘right man’ for a job, I prefer it to be the ‘right person’. Do I think Sarina could have a job in the football? Yes, I think. I’m very happy with the job he’s been doing and I hope he stays with us for a long time,” he told the Daily Express.
Sarina Wiegman, a 53-year-old Dutchwoman, would be, if this change of role in the English federation is confirmed, the first woman to coach a men’s team. It should be remembered that Gareth Southgate is currently the current England coach.
