Injury keeps Pichardo out of World Athletics

Triple jump champion Pedro Pichardo will not be able to compete for the world title at the World Athletics Championships in Budapest, which will take place from 19 to 27 August, due to an injury. Pichardo, who left yesterday with the national entourage, returned to feel the symptoms of the lower back pain that affects him.

The same injury prevented him from participating in the European Team Championships, the National Club Championships and the Portuguese Championships this season.

According to a statement from the selection, Pedro Pichardo has been examined and assessed by the medical team that accompanies the entourage to these World Cups and was advised not to participate in the competition.

According to the organization, the matter has already been reported to World Athletics by the leader of the national delegation, the Vice President of the Portuguese Athletics Federation, Fernando Tavares. In this absence, the national triple jump is represented by the athlete Tiago Luís Pereira.

This trip to Budapest has been difficult for all teams due to several flight delays, but not only.

In addition to the loss of Pichardo, the US team for Portugal will also face two relevant absences: those of sprinters and world champions Sydney McLaughlin and Michael Norman, also due to injury.
