The Association of Women Judges of Spain (AMJE) has asked the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) to implement the protocol for prevention, detection and action against harassment and sexual abuse and to “immediately” dismiss the president, Luis Rubiales.
The association states that this protocol expressly takes into account the rejection of behavior such as that of Rubiales, who kissed player Jenni Hermoso on the mouth during the medal ceremony in Sydney, Australia, after winning the Women’s World Cup.
“Luis Rubiales’ act is clearly sexist behavior on a woman’s body, performed without her consent and in a context of unequal power relations affecting women’s responsiveness,” the association defended in a statement.
For lawyers, justifying this kind of behavior means condoning a clearly sexist situation that violates the principle of equality.
On the other hand, they warn that if the RFEF does not act immediately, it will not only fail to protect a player from the Spanish national team, but also send a message to the whole society, “which justifies and protects behavior that, unfortunately, is many repeated endlessly: the attack on women’s bodies as if they were an object”.
The AMJE also addressed Jenni Hermoso: “You couldn’t have done anything to avoid the aggression you suffered and you don’t have to do anything because she and her teammates have already done everything, they have already made history”.
