Spanish women’s team player Jenni Hermoso denied Friday Luis Rubiales, president of the Royal Spanish Football Federation. In a statement, he said he had never consented to the controversial kiss following Spain’s victory at the Women’s World Cup, contradicting Rubiales’ statements that he refused to resign today.
“I want to make it clear that, as shown in the footage, at no point did I consent to the kiss he gave me and, of course, I made no attempt to bring up the president in any way. I will not tolerate my word being taken. ask, let alone make them invent words I didn’t say,” Hermoso said in a statement issued by the players’ union FutPro, quoted by El Mundo newspaper.
The statement was signed by the other players of the national team, calling for “real changes, both sporting and structural, that will help the national team grow, to be able to extend this great success to future generations”.
The more than 52 players and former players who sign the document, including the world champions, guarantee that they will not be part of a new squad if the federation’s governance structure is preserved.
Already after announcing that he had filed a complaint against Rubiales with the Administrative Court, the Secretary of State and President of the Higher Sports Council, Victor Francos, said the government is clear about the separation from the current presidency of the Federation.
“This government’s road to the presidency of the Royal Spanish Federation ends today. That is why the government is starting the procedures for Mr. Rubiales to give explanations before the Administrative Court of Sport (…). And the Supreme Sports Council is in the circumstances to If you do, you must remove Mr. Rubiales from the presidency of the Royal Spanish Federation,” said the minister.
Also today, the Union of Spanish Footballers said the leader “shouldn’t be a minute ahead of the RFEF”, relying on government action for an immediate removal.
“After this Assembly, the image of Spanish sport, both nationally and internationally, is once again seriously damaged by Luís Rubiales, whose actions increasingly jeopardize Spain’s candidacy to host the 2030 World Cup,” the Players’ Association said.
