At least 13 killed in stadium incident in Madagascar

At least 13 people have died in Madagascar today after being crushed to death at the entrance to the Barea stadium in Antananarivo ahead of the opening ceremony of the Games in the Indian Ocean islands.

The most recent balance, still preliminary, points to 13 dead, including seven minors, and 107 injured, in the incidents that took place at the Barea stadium, where more than 50,000 people wanted to attend the ceremony.

Speaking to a radio station in Madagascar, Deputy Hanitra Razafimanantsoa raised an estimate previously presented by Prime Minister Christian Ntsay of 12 killed and 80 injured, made outside a hospital in the country’s capital.

The local Red Cross says seven of the local victims are minors, two boys and five girls, and a dozen people are in serious condition, putting the death toll at risk.

In the first list of injured, the age ranges from five to seventy years, with a large number of teenagers.

At the stadium, Andry Rajoelina, the country’s president, asked for a minute’s silence and said: “We are 50,000 people in the stadium, but a tragic event happened, as there was a riot, where dead and injured the entrance fell. .”
