Last Saturday, Fernando Pimenta won the gold medal in the K1 1000 meters at the Canoe World Championships, which took place in Duisburg, Germany.
It is the third time that the Benfica canoeist has won the world title in this specialty. This triumph confirms Pimenta’s presence at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.
“It’s a dream because I’ve had a lot of retirements and injuries this year, including having covid-19 with the Europeans, which brought me down even further. In recent weeks I have injected a lot of energy into my body and mind and won this world title, the third in the K1 1000. I am grateful to my coach, my wife and my baby,” said the Portuguese athlete on flash interview after the race.
On track four, Tokyo 2020 bronze medalist Pimenta completed the race in 3,27.712 minutes, beating silver medalist Hungarian Adam Varga by 0.429 hundredths of a second and bronze medalist German Jakob Thordsen by 0.591.
Before the Pimenta race, the K1 200 meters final was played, with Portugal’s Kevin Santos in fourth place, in a race won by Lithuanian Arturas Seja. Still, the Portuguese canoeist secured qualification for the Paris Games, just like Teresa Portela, despite only finishing eighth in the K1 500m final.
State Secretary for Sport congratulates Pimenta
The Secretary of State for Youth and Sports, João Paulo Correia, has already congratulated canoeist Fernando Pimenta on his world title.
“The brilliant world title of Fernando Pimenta! Three world titles collected in the Olympic K1 1,000 meters are only within the reach of exceptional athletes. Many congratulations and a hug to the entire national delegation in Duisburg,” said João Paulo Correia on the social network X, old Twitter.
