The deputy vice president of the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF), Pedro Rocha Junco, will assume the interim presidency of the organization, after the announcement this Saturday of the provisional suspension of Luis Rubiales by FIFA.
In a statement, the RFEF reports on the appointment of Pedro Rocha after the FIFA Disciplinary Committee notified the RFEF this morning of the provisional suspension of Rubiales for his behavior after the final of the Women’s World Cup.
“In accordance with the provisions of the RFEF statutes, the vice-president attached to the presidency, Pedro Rocha Junco, will assume the interim presidency during this period,” the RFEF explains in its press release.
The RFEF also reports that Luis Rubiales stated that “he will legally defend himself before the competent bodies, he fully trusts the FIFA bodies and reiterates that, in this way, he is given the opportunity to start his defense.”
FIFA announced this Saturday that it provisionally suspended Luis Rubiales, after the controversial kiss to the player of the Spanish team Jenni Hermoso.
“Today we have decided to provisionally suspend Luis Rubiales from all soccer-related activities, nationally and internationally,” the body that manages world soccer announced in a statement, adding that the suspension will have an initial duration of 90 days.
In a statement from the FIFA Disciplinary Committee, chaired by Colombian Jorge Iván Palacio, FIFA also orders Luis Rubiales and other officials linked to the RFEF not to contact or attempt to contact soccer player Jenni Hermoso.
The controversy in Spanish football arose last Sunday, during the celebrations of the unprecedented world title of the Spanish women’s team, which defeated England 1-0 in the final, played in Sydney, when, at the time of the awards ceremony , Rubiales kissed Hermoso. in the mouth.
Numerous criticisms of what happened followed, being Hermoso, after a first version, saying that everything happened at a moment of greater euphoria, stating that he had not consented to the kiss.
After several days with much criticism from various sectors of society, the RFEF held an Extraordinary General Assembly on Friday, in which the resignation of Rubiales was expected, which did not happen, giving rise to a new peak of conflict and extreme positions, with the players announcing that they are not available to represent the team while the current leaders of the RFEF remain in office.
The day before, Thursday, FIFA had already opened a disciplinary file against Luís Rubiales for the non-consensual kiss he gave to the international Jenni Hermoso.
“These facts may constitute a violation of sections 1 and 2 of article 13 of the FIFA disciplinary code,” the body justified, alluding to the fact that the conduct could “harm the dignity or integrity” of a person, due to their sex.
