The mother of Luis Rubiales, president of the Royal Spanish Football Federation, who has come under fire after the kiss he gave to player Jenni Hermoso during the celebration of the Spanish national team’s conquest of the women’s world title, closed herself in a church on hunger strike.
Ángeles Béjar says this protest and demonstration in support of his son will continue until justice is served, the EFE agency said.
Rubiales’ mother is with her sister in the Igreja de la Divina Pastora in Motril. He believes that his son is the target of “inhuman and bloody persecution” and that he “doesn’t deserve this”. He also asks Jenni Hermoso to tell the truth and keep the version she had at the beginning of events.
For Ángeles Béjar, there is “no sexual abuse if there is consent from both parties, as the images show”, wondering “why are they so cruel to him” and what “is behind this whole story since his son “can not harm anyone.”
As a mother, she asks everyone for understanding because this situation can happen to anyone,” he said.
Luis Rubiales was suspended by FIFA on Saturday over the kissing controversy.
Previously, the leader refused to step down, assuring that it was a kiss of consent. “The moment Jenni appeared, she lifted me off the ground. I told her to forget about the penalty and that without her we wouldn’t have won. She said I was the best, I asked: “A kiss?”, she said yes. She said goodbye with a pat on the back,” said Rubiales.
In response, Jenni Hermoso issued a statement: “I clarify that the conversation to which Mr. Luis Rubiales referred did not take place at any time and that his kiss was, let alone, agreed to. Likewise, I would like to reiterate that at the time I let know I wasn’t having a good time.”
Next Monday, the Royal Spanish Football Federation will meet in an emergency to discuss the matter.
